Spring as sprung! On April 6th and 20th, SLC club members returned to the Black Mountain Open Space park for another two restoration events with the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve (FLPCP) organization. With the recent rains, the native species were flourishing. However, so were the weeds!
Therefore, volunteers from SLC joined those from the student organization Youth Care Club to help weed the area surrounding the main site. Students mostly targetted the black mustard population, which is an invasive species that is known to increase the spread of wildfires in coastal sage scrub habitats. It was first introduced my Spanish colonizers and suppresses native populations through allelopathy and other mechanisms.
Outside of weeding, SLC volunteers also visited the new site along the Awhee Trail to water the native species. There, they were also able to view their progress from planting in February!
