On December 6, 2025, the Pacific Highlands Ranch Public Library hosted an important event for our community: the Preventing Fraud Seminar. We were excited to welcome Alex Hu, Vice President and Branch Manager at Banner Bank, as our guest speaker to discuss how to spot different types of fraud and how to stay safe.
Mr. Hu began by sharing real-world examples, including suspicious text messages he had received personally. He explained exactly how he identified them as fake and highlighted the warning signs to look out for. The presentation then moved to the specific groups most often targeted by these criminals and the tactics they use, such as threatening messages or tricking people into thinking there is an emergency.
Our student volunteers played a big role in making the event a success. They arrived early to set up the chairs, banners, and background. They also distributed information packets filled with tips on avoiding specific types of fraud. Throughout the seminar, the team listened closely to the presentation and stayed afterward to help clean up and put the equipment away.
The seminar wrapped up with a Q&A session where community members shared their own experiences with attempted scams. The main takeaway was clear: we need to stay alert. Mr. Hu encouraged everyone to share what they learned with friends and family to help stop the rising number of fraud cases. By staying informed and spreading the word, we can work together to keep our community safe.
